UTME 2021 : All You Need to Know About NIN

As JAMB is about to commence the online registration of 2021 UTME, here are the things candidates must know about the National Identification Number (NIN).

What is NIN

NIN is an acronym for National Identification Number which consists of 11 non- intelligible numbers randomly chosen and assigned to an individual at the completion of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB).

Generally speaking, NIN is a National security network assigned numbers used to track all citizens and legal residents of a particular country.

How do NIN Look Like in Nigeria

In Nigeria, NIN contains 11 unique numbers assigned to each citizen or resident of the country. It is strictly given after complete enrollment by NIMC.

Is NIN Compulsory For 2021 UTME Registration

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB in series of tweets from their social handle that, NIN is the only way 2021 UTME Candidates can be registered online. JAMB in its publication added that no NIN no UTME. NIN is not only compulsory but also necessary in every part of your doing in Nigeria.

How do 2021 UTME Candidates Get NIN for Registration

Firstly, all candidates can only get or register for NIN Only at the enrolment centres. All UTME candidates can register or enroll in any part of the Country.

Who is Eligible to Get NIN For 2021 UTME

All candidates desiring to purchase 2021 JAMB UTME registration are eligible to apply, All citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enrol for their NINs. However minors are not issued with the National Identity cards until they attain the age of 16, but a slip will be issued to you after enrollment. Minors are people under 15 years of age.

NIMC Requirements for Minors Enrolment [Below 16 years]

Majority of candidates desiring to purchase 2021 JAMB UTME registration form may be under 15 years, if you fall between this age bracket, below are the requirements for NIN Enrolment.

  1. Parent/Guardian’s National Identification Number (NIN) Slip ( father, mother or guardian’s NIN ) MUST be provided.
  2. Supporting documents and evidence of proof as the Guardian to the minor (if Guardian’s NIN is used).
  3. Registered Birth Certificate/ Statutory Age Declaration.
  4. All minors MUST be accompanied by at least one of the parents or a Guardian.

  5. Nigerian passport
  6. Attestation letter from a prominent ruler in the community

NIN Enrolment Requirements for Adults [Above 16 years]

Adults who wish to register for NIN are required to locate any enrollment centre with BVN if you have one and any of the following required Original and Valid supporting documents:

  1. BVN (Compulsory)
  2. Old National ID Card
  3. Driver’s License
  4. Voter’s card (Temporary or Permanent)
  5. Nigerian International passport
  6. Certificate of Origin
  7. Attestation letter from a prominent ruler in your community
  8. Birth certificate
  9. Declaration of age
  10. Attestation letter from religious/traditional leader
  11. NHIS ID card
  12. Government staff ID card
  13. Registered/recognized private organization staff ID card
  14. School ID Card (private/public)
  15. Tax Clearance certificate
  16. Valid immigration documents

NIN Enrolment Procedure for 2021 UTME Registration

The procedure for both adults and minors enrollment is almost the same. Having known the requirements, move forward with the steps below ;

  • Candidates should walk into any enrolment Centre with Their parent/guardian and the required supporting document.
  • Candidate will be verified to ascertain if he/she has enrolled before through the verification portal.
  • Candidate will be issued an enrolment form to fill if he/she has not enrolled before. OR the printed Barcode slip will be collected if the applicant had pre-enrolled earlier using the pre-enrolment services.
  • Candidate forms will be vetted by a NIMC Official to crosscheck the information filled on the form against the supporting document provided and to check for errors/mistake filled on the form.
  • Candidates pre-filled information will be inputted on the NIMC Software by a NIMC enrolment officer or the Barcode slip be scanned by the NIMC enrolment officer to populate all the required fields.
  • The enrolment officer will ask the applicant’s parents to double check their ward information using the applicant’s monitor to check for errors.
  • If the Parent/Guardian is satisfied with the demographics information inputted, the biometrics of the applicant will be captured subsequently.
  • After completing the enrolment registration, a Transaction Slip will be issued to the applicant as an evidence of the transaction. However, the Transaction slip does not confer the right to National Identification Number. The applicant will be requested to come back for the NIN within 1-5 working days, as it is subject to the speed/availability of network, authentication and verification.
  • A National Identification Number Slip is issued to the applicant after processing.
  • The National e-ID Card will not be issued to this categories of applicant until they become 16 years of age and above.
  • A text message will automatically be sent to the Applicant, Parent or guardian to come for update when they become 16years of age.

Completion & Issuance of NIN Slip Before UTME Registration 2021

At the completion of the enrolment process, applicant will be issued two (2) slips:  (a) Transaction Slip (b) NIN Slip indicating completion of enrolment.

  • Applicants ideally collect their NINs at the enrolment centres where they enrolled, but in certain circumstances they can request the NINs be transferred to other centres of their choice.
  • NIN can only be collected by an individual after biometric verification and not by proxy.

The NIN is set to be used for all transactions in Nigeria requiring identity verification so you’ll be using your NIN for

  • obtaining your National e-ID card
  • travel (international passport application & acquisition)
  • opening personal bank accounts
  • getting your driver’s license
  • obtaining your Permanent Voters’ Card
  • participating in the National Health Insurance Scheme
  • payment of your taxes
  • transactions related to your contributory pension scheme
  • access to welfare and other relevant services from the Nigerian Government
  • transactions with social security implications
  • land transactions subject to the Land Use Act
  • any other transactions NIMC may so prescribe and list in the Federal Government Gazette
